A real race, one invented hero

Decades before the space race, the United States and Japan raced to control the air routes across the Pacific. Nick Grant is a headstrong teenager from a poor Alameda family who signs on with Pan American Airways in 1935 and lands in the middle of it. The flying boats, the island bases and most of the people around him are real. Nick is the one invention.

Nick's World

The history behind the novels

Jamie researched the period for years, interviewing early Pan Am captains, radio officers and stewards. The research lives here: the aircraft, the supply ship, the island bases, the spies and the maps.
